KENNEDY AND SCOTT SIGN CFL DEALS

By Michael Grobe

Kingston, Ont. (February 29, 2008) – Cody Kennedy of Glenelg, N.S. and Kevin Scott of Ottawa – both members of the Queen’s University Golden Gaels football program – have signed professional contracts to play in the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Kennedy, a 6’7, 325lbs left offensive tackle for the Gaels, has signed a two-year deal with the Calgary Stampeders.  The graduate in Mining Engineering and Economics has played all five-seasons with the Gaels, dressing for 39 regular season and five playoff games.  Kennedy was a four-year starter and this year anchored an offensive line that blocked for running back Mike Giffin (Kingston, Ont.) who was the school’s first 1,000 yard-rusher.

“Cody is a talented player and we are extremely proud of him,” said Head Football Coach Pat Sheahan. “A lot of credit has to be given to our offensive line for Giffin attaining the 1,000-yard mark; Cody was certainly a driving force to why it happened.  He was an important component of our team here at Queen’s for several seasons. He will be missed, but we wish him well.”

Scott, a 6’3, 235lbs defensive lineman for the Gaels, has signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and will attend training camp for the defending Grey Cup champions along with fellow teammates Rob Bagg of Kingston and Ryan Freeman of Burlington, Ont.   Scott is a former Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Second-Team All-Star during the 2005 season and has been the long snapper for the Gaels the last four years.

In his five year career with the Gaels he dressed for 32 regular season and five playoff games recording 26 solo tackles. He will graduate with an Honours degree in Politics this Spring.

“Kevin is a determined and dedicated individual that will lead him to great things.” said Sheahan. “He is the type of player willing to do what it takes for the better of the team.  Someone with his skill set does not come along every day and he is a fine addition to the Roughriders.”

Queen’s University Golden Gaels football will return this September in a Labour Day Monday (September 1) match-up against the McMaster Marauders in Kingston.  Season tickets can be purchased by calling 613-533-2500.  For a full schedule visit www.goldengaels.com.
