QUEEN’S ANNOUNCES 2008 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

-Gaels set to take on Western during Homecoming Weekend-

Kingston, Ont. (February 14, 2008) – The Queen’s Golden Gaels are pleased to announce its portion of the 2008 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) football schedule.  In all the Gaels will have eight regular season games including four home dates.

Highlighting the season is the anticipated matchup against the University of Western Ontario Mustangs on Saturday, September 27th at Richardson Stadium.  The match-up will coincide with Queen’s Homecoming Weekend and is a rematch of the 2007 OUA Quarter-Final where the Mustangs defeated the Gaels 27-19 en route to a Yates Cup title.

Queen’s will open the season on Labour Day at home against the McMaster Marauders on Monday, September 1st.  Just five days later, the Gaels will travel to Guelph to face off against the 2007 Yates Cup finalists Gryphons on Saturday, September 6th.  The Gaels last trip to Guelph’s Alumni Stadium was two years ago and saw the Tricolour win behind a four-touchdown game by Brad Smith.

In week three of the season the Gaels will host the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Haws for the second consecutive year.  Last season the Hawks were one of only two teams to defeat the Gaels at Richardson Stadium.  The Gaels will follow the Laurier game with a trip to Toronto on September 20th to play the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.  Week four will see Queen’s return for Homecoming against Western.

The Gaels will close the season with two of their final games on the road returning to Toronto on October 4th to meet the York Lions.  The two schools did not meet last season and will face each other for the first time since 2006.  Queen’s final home game will come on Thanksgiving weekend against two-time defending OUA regular season champions – the Ottawa Gee-Gee’s.  Ottawa and Queen’s will match-up on Saturday, October 11th starting at 1:00pm.

Closing the regular season Queen’s will travel to face off against the Waterloo Warriors on October 18th.  The Gaels toppled Waterloo last season 45-0 during Queen’s 2007 Homecoming Weekend.

The two OUA quarter-final games are slated for Saturday, October 25, while the two semi-finals will take place on Saturday, November 1. The OUA season comes to a close when the two playoff survivors compete to have their names etched into the Yates Cup which is set for Saturday, November 8.  The Yates Cup winner will host the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) champion in the Mitchell Bowl one week later.

The 2008 football season will conclude as the OUA hosts the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Desjardin Vanier Cup on November 22 at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton.
